Google Maps Ranking Dropped? How to Get Back Into the Local Pack

Google Maps ranking dropped: phone showing local pack listings with map pins

For most local service businesses, the Google Maps pack brings in more calls than every other channel combined. So when your business drops from the top three to the eighth result, the phone goes quiet fast.

The good news: a Google Maps ranking drop usually has a cause you can find in an afternoon. This guide covers the checks I run, in order, for contractors and home service companies.

Why Google Maps Rankings Drop

A Google Maps ranking drops when Google sees your Business Profile as less relevant, less prominent or less trustworthy than nearby competitors for a search, or when something on the profile changed: an edit, a suspension, a category change, a review problem or a move of the business address. Google ranks local results on three factors it publishes itself: relevance, distance and prominence.

Step 1: Check the Profile for Edits, Warnings and Suspension

  • Open your Business Profile and look for a notice that the profile is suspended, under review or has updates from Google or the public.
  • Check whether your business name, categories, hours, address or service area were changed by Google or a user suggestion.
  • Confirm the profile is still verified.
  • Search your business name on Google Maps from a phone. If it does not show at all, the profile may be suspended or filtered.

Profile edits are the most common cause I see. A changed primary category or a removed service area can drop rankings overnight.

Step 2: Measure the Drop Properly

Do not judge Maps rankings from one search on your own phone. Results change with the searcher’s location. Use the Performance report in your Business Profile to see searches, calls and direction requests over time, and use a grid rank tracker to see your position across your service area. A drop in one corner of town is a different problem from a drop everywhere.

Step 3: Review Categories and Services

  • Your primary category should match your main service exactly (for example Roofing contractor, not Contractor).
  • Add secondary categories only for services you really offer.
  • List each service with a clear description that uses the words customers search for.
  • Check whether top competitors use a more specific primary category than you.

Step 4: Compare Reviews With the Businesses Now Above You

Step 5: Check NAP Consistency and Your Website

Google cross-checks your business name, address and phone number (NAP) with your website and directories. If you moved, changed phone numbers or rebranded, outdated listings can weaken trust. Also check that your website still has a strong page for each main service and town, and that it loads and ranks normally. A website ranking drop often drags the Maps listing down with it; if your site traffic fell too, start with our website rankings drop audit.

Step 6: Look for Spam and New Competitors

Sometimes you did not drop; someone else jumped. New competitors, keyword-stuffed business names and fake listings can push real businesses down. Search your main keywords across your area and note any listing that breaks Google’s guidelines, such as a name stuffed with keywords or a fake address. You can suggest an edit or report it through Google Maps. Keep your own profile clean: adding keywords to your business name breaks the guidelines and can get you suspended.

Step 7: Rebuild Prominence

  • Post updates and photos of real jobs on your profile regularly.
  • Keep hours, holiday hours and services accurate.
  • Answer questions in the Q&A section.
  • Earn local links and mentions: suppliers, local associations, sponsorships and local news.
  • Build service and area pages on your website that match your profile categories.

How Long Does a Maps Ranking Recovery Take?

If the cause was a profile edit, a category change or a suspension that gets reinstated, rankings often return within days to a few weeks. If competitors simply out-reviewed or out-built you, recovery depends on how quickly you close that gap, usually a few months of steady reviews and content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my business suddenly drop on Google Maps?

The most common causes are edits to the Business Profile (name, category, address or service area), a suspension or verification issue, filtered reviews, a website ranking drop, or new competitors with stronger reviews.

How do I check if my Google Business Profile is suspended?

Open the profile while signed in. A suspended profile shows a notice, and the business usually stops appearing when you search its name on Google Maps.

Does changing my primary category affect Maps rankings?

Yes. The primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Changing it can move rankings up or down overnight.

Can reviews make my Google Maps ranking drop?

Yes. A slowdown in new reviews, filtered reviews or competitors gaining many more reviews can all lower your prominence compared with others.

Should I add keywords to my business name on Google?

No. Keyword stuffing the business name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended. Use your real business name.

How long does it take to get back into the local pack?

Fixing a profile edit or suspension can restore rankings within days to weeks. Catching up with competitors on reviews and content usually takes a few months.
